Respectable outing for Sabah squash players

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah junior squash players obtained respectable finishes at the recently-ended 9th CIMB Foundation National Junior Circuit 1st Leg held at the Nicol David International Squash Centre in Penang last week.

Five out of 11 State players finished in the top eight of their respective categories with the highest finisher being recent 4th South East Asia Cup Women's Singles champion, Jessica Keng Jia Hui.

The second seeded 16-year-old could only settle for second place in the Girls' Under-19 category after losing out to top seed and fellow national junior star, Aira Azman in a nail-biting, 6-11, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11 final match.

Aira also defeated another Sabahan player Yee Xin Ying during the semi-final where "Yee then lost to Noor Ainaa Amani Ampandi in the third/fourth play-off to finish fourth.

The Boys' Under-19 players also showed positive potential as Duncan Lee Yung Yii finished third after defeating second seed Muhd Hafiz Zhafri Abdul Harif, 12-10, 11-4, 11-2 in the third/fourth play-off, while Nicholas Tan Zheng Xin lost to Ooi Jian Qi, 6-11, 13-11, 8-11, 9-11, in the seventh/eighth play-off to settle for eighth place in the category.

Lastly, Kayden Liaw Juin Wuen managed to finish sixth in the Boys' Under-17 category despite losing out to Ong Jin Zher, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11-13 in a thrilling 5-8th play-off.
