KUCHING: The Rotary Club of Kuching Central (RCKC) in partnership with the CIMB Foundation recently handed over 70 intraocular lenses (IOLs) to Sri Aman Hospital as part of its 'Rotary Brings Vision to Sri Aman' project.

RCKC in a statement yesterday said 70 less fortunate and underserved individuals in Sri Aman will have a chance to restore their vision.

"For 2017, this CIMB Foundation Community Link corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative has committed to donate 210 IOLs amounting to RM55,000 through RCKC.

"The IOLs are to be handed over to the IMalaysia Cataract Clinic (KK1M) Mobile Clinic and Sri Aman Hospital and for this week, 70 underserved individuals will have the opportunity to receive a cataract operation for their vision to be restored, the club said.

RCKC president Clarence Yong was on hand to present the IOLs to Sri Aman Hospital which was represented by Dr Ooi Soon Ming. Also present to witness the handover was Assistant Minister of Rural Economy (Interior Areas) and Plantation Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, who is also Simanggang assemblyman.

The Community Link initiative is a unique CSR programme by CIMB Foundation which leverages on the nationwide network of over 274 CIMB Bank and CIMB Islamic branches to reach out to communities served by them. The programme empowers the community to propose causes that will enhance the lives of those within the neighbourhood. Community Link has implemented approximately 800 projects in Malaysia since 2008.

Meanwhile, RCKC has been actively providing free cataract operations for patients from the low income group.

Its first project was a cataract operation in Kapit in 2008 followed by another at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here two years later where patients were brought in from as far away as Sri Aman, Betong, Serian and Lundu.

Patient selection was carried out with assistance from SGH and are based on criteria such as monthly household income below RM800; number of dependents; no financial support from family members; no side income; recipients receiving monthly financial assistance under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) as well as people with disabilities (OKU).
